Guerneville California |
Nestled in a deep wooded canyon in the Coast Range, Guerneville was a product of the logging industry. The town developed as a result of loggers and railway workers passing through, and many workers ended up staying in the area. The lumber industry created the need for the railroad, which was the next industry to boom in the area and much of the products and profits were sent to San Francisco. The railroad was abandoned in 1935, during the Great Depression.
The town was a favorite family resort. Guerneville was the heart of the Russian River resort area, one of many summer playgrounds for the San Francisco Bay area. The summer population grew to over fifty thousand as summer vacation cabins and campgrounds swelled with Bay Area families.
A California State Park Ranger Station is located in one of the old railway buildings as is a California State Park Store. There are eight restaurants, some gift stores, and a country store.
Guerneville is located in Sonoma County just northwest of Santa Rosa between Jenner and Santa Rosa along Highway 116 near the Pacific Ocean.
