Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Reserv |
Elkhorn Slough, one of the few remaining relatively undisturbed wetlands in California, protects the habits of hundreds of species of birds, fish, and invertebrates. Covering slightly less than 1400 acres, the reserve also is an important feeding and resting ground for many waterfowl and migrating shorebirds.
Visitors to the Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve can catch quite a glimpse of what the slough has to offer. But because the reserve is dedicated to preservation, camping, picnicking, riding and fishing are not allowed on the grounds, and there are no boat launches. Visitors can enjoy the walking trails that wind among live oak and eucalyptus groves. Picnicking is allowed in certain areas. Smoking is now allowed on the trails. Guided nature walks originating at the nature center are offered on weekends. Please call to inquire on times and admission prices.
