Established in 1957 as the State College for Alameda County, this college began with 293 students meeting in classrooms in downtown Hayward. The college moved to the current site in the Hayward hills in 1963. The college was granted University status in 1972 and renamed.
The campus is located in the Hayward Hills overlooking the San Francisco Bay, approximately fifteen miles from Oakland. The campus occupies 342 parkline acres. There are nine major buildings on campus, including classroom and faculty office buildings, the University Library, the administration building, the University Union, Pioneer bookstore, student health center, and Pioneer Heights, a 404 student apartment complex. The 8,400 square foot television studio complex is one of the largest on the West Coast. CSUH also operates the Contra Costa Campus, a branch center in Concord with over 2,500 students.
