Benicia is located in Solano County northeast of San Francisco between Vallejo and Concord along US Highway 780 near Suisun and San Pablo bays. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 26,851, an increase of 2,414 since 1990.

Benicia is part of the Vallejo-Fairfield-Napa, California metro area.

It was named after the wife of Gen. Mariano Vallejo, the last Mexican governor of California. It also served as the state capital for one year, from 1853 to 1854.
