Balboa Park

At the Heart of the City

One of the major San Diego attractions, this 1200 acre recreation and cultural center, Balboa Park is situated at the NE edge of the business district. 200-foot California Tower, the park's most visible feature, contains a 100-bell carillon that chimes every 15 minutes. The park was the site of the 1915-16 Panama-Pacific International Exposition, which promoted the role of the Panama Canal in west coast transportation. Many Moorish and Spanish-renaissance style buildings remain along El Prado (The Promenade).

Points of interest in the park include:

A $30 one-week passport allows admission to all 15 Balboa Park museums, one ticket per museum. Obtain them at the Balboa Park Visitors Center in front of the San Diego Museum of Art.
